In less than 10 minutes, Villa Park High School raised $1,440 for John Boyd today – even if he plays for their rival's football team.

And there are more donations on the way.

The Canyon High School star football player was diagnosed with acute lymphocyte leukemia in August.

Villa Park High cheerleader Hailey Koch wanted to start a spirit squad (a group of students who cheer from the stands) during Villa Park football games. She dubbed it the "Black Pack" and hoped to design shirts for the students to wear.

When Koch teamed up with classmate Nick Turner last Friday, they decided that the proceeds from the shirt sales could help out Boyd and his family.

J and M Promotions, the Orange company that made the shirts, made the first 144 shirts for free if all the proceeds would go to the Boyd Family.

They now have to make 500 more and deliver the $10 shirts to the school by lunch Friday.

"We weren't sure how the students would react since it is a rival school but they just went crazy," said Koch's mother, Tamara. "We just really hope it helps John."

At Friday's game against Foothill, there will be a group of Villa Park students on their feet cheering for their team in the stands. But they'll donning black shirts with a backpack drawn on the back. On the flap of the backpack, beside a teeny football it reads: "Stand strong for John."
